Memorial's Story

In 1891 Misses Maude and Sallie Kenyon made a personal solicitation of all Baptists in the town to meet at their home on October 9, 1881. On that day the first Baptist Sunday school was organized. At the time the Baptists were so few and so poor that they could only pay for the lesson books that were necessary, so the songs were copied by hand and passed around each Sunday. After two years, the group began meeting in the town hall, and eventually the women began to plan for a church building. With undaunted faith and courage, the women contracted for the lot on which the church building now stands, for a price of $300.

On September 6, 1891, the church was formally constituted with twenty-one members. The name “Memorial” was chosen because of the many memorial windows which had been given in honor of loved ones. Not long after the first building was complete, a cyclone hit on September 29, 1986, leaving nothing of the building except a marble table-top. In January 1898, the church rebuilt the building. The church thrived for many years, under various leaders. Sadly, on March 9, 1941 the church building was completely destroyed by fire. The church building was rebuilt and occupied on October 19,1941. As the church grew, eventually an educational space was added in 1965. The church has always been about God’s glory. We pray to continue this legacy through the next generation.

In 2021 Memorial Baptist Church started a new chapter when they voted unanimously to begin a process of revitalization. We are looking forward to reaching every man, woman and child with the Gospel for generations to come in St. George. God has blessed our church family for over a hundred years, the stories of salvation could fill pages of a book. We trust that God still has many exciting things ahead. Memorial has a bright past and an even brighter future!
